Three dates before December 31
TFSA timing, the FHSA deadline nobody mentions, and the RRSP date for your 2026 return.
Hello,
Welcome to the first Carnet weekly note. The format will stay the same every Sunday: one note worth reading, the dates coming up, one number, one clause from the fine print. Five minutes, sourced to official pages, and nothing to buy.
This week is about the end of the year, because three of the most useful money deadlines in Canada fall before most people start thinking about taxes.
This week's note
TFSA contribution room for 2027: what changes Jan 1
On January 1 your TFSA room grows by three amounts at once: the new dollar limit, your unused room, and everything you withdrew in 2026. That last one is why timing matters. A withdrawal you were already planning for early 2027 gets its room back a full year sooner if you make it in December instead.
Dates to note
- Thu, Dec 31, 2026
- Last day for FHSA contributions to count for 2026. There is no 60-day grace period.
- Thu, Dec 31, 2026
- Last day for a TFSA withdrawal to come back as room on January 1, 2027. Ask your institution for its cut-off.
- Mon, Mar 1, 2027
- RRSP deadline for your 2026 return.
- Fri, Apr 30, 2027
- Filing and payment deadline for most people. Self-employed people file by June 15 but still pay by April 30.
The number
$109,000
Total TFSA room from 2009 to 2026 for someone who has been eligible every year and has never contributed. Most people have less, which is why the CRA tells you to check your own records rather than the figure in your CRA account.
One clause
“Must meet all conditions within 60 days of account opening.”
A sign-up bonus usually has two clocks: a date to apply by, and a separate window to qualify. Missing the second one by a day forfeits the bonus. Put both dates in your calendar the day you apply.
Not yet announced
The 2027 TFSA dollar limit. As of October 31, 2026, the CRA lists $7,000 for 2026 and nothing for 2027. Commentators expect $7,500 based on the inflation formula, but it isn't official until the CRA says so, usually in late November or early December. We'll tell you the week it's published.
